Ford Fiesta ST – young drivers insurance nightmare
Ford Fiesta ST
There is no doubt about it the Fiesta ST certainly looks the part! With an agressive body kit, projector headlamps, big bore exhaust, 17 inch sport alloys and the racing strips (optional) this car screams hot hatch and is far from subtle. For some this car will be too in your face, but for the hardcore young hot hatch maxpower generation this is the business.
At £13595 on the road its not too expensive and consdering th high risk type of driver that this car will attract an insurance group of 15 is reasonable, as always however the high performance insurance rating will mean exorbitant premiums for those young drivers this type of car appeals to, although not as bad as an Impreza or Evo make no mistake if you are under 25 and have anything less than a squeaky clean license the insurance on this car will make you weep! The interior of the Fiesta is sporting but perhaps not as obvious as the exterior, two tone seats, grey dials and a prominent ST badge lifting the interior from basic Fiesta spec, rear space is a bit cramped but boot is decent. Where the Fiesta St excels is the chassis, Ford have become experts in recent years developing agile cars with sporty handling with Focus and Mondeo winning numerous awards and praise from the motoring press. The Fiesta is no different, no other small hot hatch can match the accurate, delicate and precise handling of this car, on a twisting country road the Fiesta is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of any keen driver.
The engine is a tried and tested Ford 2.0 four cylinder unit, normally aspirated, unlike other hatches in this class using smaller engines with turbo charging, the Ford is not particularly fast, this is not a car to drag race. Rather than using the brute force approach to develop maximum power Ford have been more subtle and have relied on the wonderful chassis for the ST sportiness, although the engine does make some nice gravelly noises when revved(helped no doubt with that big bore exhaust!). The power output of 148bhp is perfectly respectable for a car of this size but the chassis could cope with so much more!
In terms of running costs the Fiest ST is average in its class, with a cost per mile of 43p. Parts are cheap and the mechanicals are well proven. With a combined average of 38mpg and holding onto around 48% of its value after 3 years. This is an excellent second hand buy, you can pick up a mint condition 3 year old car for around #6000 which is not a lot of money for a head turning hot hatch.
